What is a normal pool filter pressure?
Whatever your clean starting pressure is — often 10–20 PSI depending on the system. When pressure rises 8–10 PSI above clean, it’s time to backwash or clean the cartridge.
Filter pressure is high right after a storm — do I need a new filter?
Usually not. Storm debris loads the filter. Backwash sand/DE or deep-clean cartridges first. Replace only if grids/cartridges are torn, mushy, or pressure never recovers.
Why is filter pressure low instead of high?
Low pressure often means weak pump flow, a clogged impeller, or a suction-side problem — not a dirty filter. Don’t backwash a low-pressure system expecting a fix.
How often should I backwash in summer?
When pressure rises, not on a fixed calendar. After storms or heavy use you may backwash more; in quiet weeks, less. Over-backwashing wastes water and can channel sand filters.
Cartridge filter still dirty after rinsing — now what?
A garden hose won’t remove oils and fine scale. Use a proper cartridge cleaner soak, or replace aging cartridges. Two sets of cartridges help you rotate during swim season.
Can high filter pressure burn up my pump?
Running against a severe restriction stresses the system and reduces cooling flow through the pump. Clean the filter promptly when the gauge climbs.
Pressure gauge reads zero all the time
The gauge may be broken, or the pump isn’t building pressure (no prime / no flow). Don’t assume the filter is clean — verify circulation at the returns.
I backwashed but pressure barely dropped
Channeling, exhausted media, a stuck multiport, or a clogged impeller can cause that. Repeat backwash isn’t the fix — needs inspection.
How often do cartridge filters need replacing vs cleaning?
Clean through the season; replace when pleats are soft, cracked, or pressure returns to high immediately after a deep clean. Lifespan varies with bather load and storms.
Sand coming into the pool — filter problem?
Yes — cracked laterals, too much air/backwash issues, or wrong sand level. Stop and schedule service; more backwashing can worsen lateral damage.
